How can I backup VMware virtual machines with size larger than 2 TB?

if you look at the first document you quoted you can see that it depends on code changes from VMware.

However to answer your question have you tried the workarounds mentioned in the same document, for instance a standard remote agent backup, although this may also have problems if a database is stored on the volume (Exchange or SQL etc) and a 4k sector size is in use (instead of 512byte)
