How can I verify a backup tape to make sure it is readable?

We perform audit procedures on our backups, recovery, etc.  While I know the backup tapes are written to and are being verified (using that option), I would like to verify any given tape in the library can be read.

So, simply put, want to read a tape and make sure it can be read withuot errors.

Appreciate your knowledge and suggestions.

Thanks,

The verify option does just that.  It reads the tape to verify the data that is on it.  The verify option does not actually go out and check the data against the original version.  It just reads a check sum on the tape that is placed for every block written.

Other then that, All I could suggest is to run a restore every now and then.  Before you ask, no you can not schedule the restores.

As Ben says the verify option which you are using verifies that the tape is readable and consistent straight after the backup. If you want to verify a backup at a later date, then you can run a Verify Backup job, found under File, New, Verify Backup Data Job.
