How to backup multiple servers

Shobosh
Not applicable

I have 6 servers, 4 of which have tape drives runing BE 2012 core and 2 servers with BE 2012 agent.

I need to backup all servers to one high capacity tape drive once a month.

If I pick the tape drive with the highest capacity, will I be able to backup the whole system to the one tape or is there a licencing issue?

Cheers

Shobosh

You can backup everything onto one tape if the amount of data does not exceed the tape capacity. Use one  server with the core BE installed as the media server and backup the other 5 servers from this server. You would need one job per server.  The first job will specidy overwrite and the rest will append to the tape.  See my article below on how to manage your jobs.

as suggested by PKh you can backup all the server to one tape Drive as far as it has enough space to accomdate backup of all the server . Does the 4 servers on which you have backup exec 21012 installed of Same make ?

As far as Licensing , there is no license required to backup to a standalone drive. If you are creating backup from One of the media server , you would need 5 remote agent license to perform the backup.

Incase if you have same type of drive on all the 4 media server , you would just need two remote agent license to perform the backup>

No. You don't. The core BE licence comes with a RAWS licence.

Why would having the same type of drive on the 4 media servers make a difference?  Aren't you contradicting your second paragraph?

I may be wrong here,

as per document http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH48939

"At the media server (Backup Exec server), the Remote Agent serial numbers for each remote Windows computer that is to be protected must be installed.  To back up a remote Windows computer from more than one media server, each media server must have a valid Remote Agent serial number."

I thought To backup a remote media server you would need a remote agent license installed on the server from where you are backing up, but you dont need to install the remote agent.

I know it works , But is it compliant w.r.t licensing . If it is It mean you can backup other media server without any remote agent license installed  .

Hi All

The License guide for BE 2012 states

"Purchase one Agent for Windows for each remote Windows server to be protected."

You can use this agent to backup that windows server to multiple BE media servers if you wish
