Hi everyone !
On a Windows 2008 Server R2, vCenter Server (a component of VMware vSphere) has been installed with SQL Server 2008 Express (for vCenter database).
On this same server, I installed later Backup Exec 2012 on a SQL instance created by SQL Server 2008 Express.
Now, I try to uninstall Backup Exec 2012 with Remove/Add program of Windows Server.
After clicking Yes to confirm, the uninstall process shows that it will remove:
Could you telle me what happens in this case ?.
The uninstall process will remove SQL Server 2008 Express and all databases (like vCenter) located on it ?
Thanks you for your help.

Hi Jack,
The BEDB should be its own SQL Express installation. I used to run the same configuration and never had any issues with vCenter when uninstalling BE during issues which required a complete uninstall.
If you do have concerns, grab a copy of the vCenter SQL Express database, and then proceed with the uninstallation of BE itself.
Thanks!

When BE is uninstalled, it shows Microsoft SQL as being removed as well. However, it uninstalls only its instance and not the complete SQL itself.

Hi Craig and VJ !
Thanks you for your answers.
To be sure what I said, I post here a screen-shot (be2012_uninstall.jpg)
Having a idea that Microsoft SQL Express may propably removed by the
uninstall process maked me a little bit confuse.
When I saw this line, I stopped this process.
For my case, the windows 2008 Server R2 has SQL Server 2008 Express (SQL
Server components.jpg)
- vCenter database located on a SQL instance by defautl (SQL Instance by
default vCenter.jpg)
- Backup Exec 2012 database is located on SQL instance named BKUPEXEC
(SQL Instance named BKUPEXEC.jpg)
If I understand well:
- the uninstall process will remove ONLY the SQL instance named BKUPEXEC.
- the SQL Server 2008 Express and SQL instance by default will be OK
after this Backup Exec uninstall.
Can you confirm that's correct ?.

...it will only remove the BEDB as I mentioned, but again...if you want to be safer than sorry, just grab a copy of the vCenter database.
I personally have uninstalled BE 2010 R3 with its own database on a vCenter and never had an issue.
Thanks!

It will remove only the instance used by Backup Exec. Other instances will not be affected.

...yep, as mentioned.
Thanks!

There is a difference between removing an instance and removing the DB (as mentioned by you). Well anyways, yes, the outcome of vCenter not being affected remains the same.

As said before, it will uninstall it's own instance, not the entire SQL installation. We had this setup as well and no issues uninstalling it.

...it's a case of semantics, but OK.
Thanks!
