I was going to install BE 9.1 first, and then upgrade to 10. But when I tried to install BE 9.1, I recieved the same error

I have installed backup Exec 9.1 & 10 on windows 2003 before and have not encountered this problem

Were you using the domain admin account or some other admin account? Having just installed today using domain admin account it seems to prefer this?

Hi,

Try installing MSDE instance on a different partition. Refer the following Technote for the same.
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/263147.htm

Make sure that you are not performing the installation using Terminal services. If you are using Terminal services, try to perform local installation and check the results.

Stop all third party and antivirus services during the installation.

Make sure the "SYSTEM account" has full control over source, destination, and temp directories.
