HI,

I have a very strange problem with backup exec 10d 5629

since a few days de backup jobs keeps failing,
when i started a cleaning job for the drive it starts, but the percentage complete keep changing from 10, 11, 14, 16 and back to 10%
the job never end.

I contacted dell tecnical support for the drive, i send the log en they replaced te unit.

but that didnt fix the problem.

when i start a new job,
the job status changes to queued,
after a few seconds its changed to loading media,
again after a few seconds its changes back to queued, etc etc etc...... it never ends, and never start backing up data.

when i peform test runs of my jobs, they are succesvol.
Initializing the unit is succesvol,
when i perform a catalog ore inventory it gives the switching status again.

i downloaded the latest device drivers from the site, no result.
i restarted the server, services, unit etc etc with also no result.

there where no changes, updates etc installed on the server before the errors started.

What can i do about this problem ?

server : windows 2003 R2 standard SP2
Backup Exec 10d 5629
dell powervault 124

Thanks in advance !

Hi,
before call Dell again, because I think your drive "out of order", check scsi conections.
Verify if scsi controller is allright
Remove any tape drives
Delete any tape devices
Reboot server
Reinstall drives..

I think Dell did not install a new device

Thanks for youre reply,

yesterday i found on the support site that some scsi id's should not be used, e.g. 0,1 and 6.
So i changed it to id 5.

Dell didint send a brand new one, but a refurbished one.

Because the unit is in oure datacenter, i cant do anything on the hardware from here,
i think i will make an appointment there to change the tapes, clear te unit, delete it, reconnect it, etc.

greats,
Steve

I suspicion the drive was not new.
I do not understand why Scsi Id was changed, by defualt is 5.
Asks a new drive.

i didnt understand that also.

but.. i have found the problem.
i dont know why i didnt noticed it yesterday.

an inventory scan from backup exec didnt work,
but on the management page of the unit there is also a inventory scan possible.
so i run it..
and the result is : al slots in magazine are full, but also the slot in de drive.

So Dell give us an free tape with the new unit.
i send it to the mailslot and now my jobs run succesfully
