Jobs Fail with "Unknown" Error

We're running BackupExec 11d for Windows servers (rev 7170) on a Windows 2003 Server (SP 1).  We use an external, USB-connected HP DAT-72 tape drive.  We're running the BackupExec agent for Microsoft SQL and the Continuous Protection Server agent.

For the last month and a half, each of our backup jobs fail with the same error:

Completed Status: Failed
Final error: 0xe00084f4 - An unknown error has occurred.
Final error category: System Errors

I've read the information provided by the link and it simply suggests updating the tape device drivers to latest version, which I've now done.  I've also downloaded and applied all of the hotfixes, patches and updates for BackupExec 11d. 

It appears that the data is all being written to the tape and that the job is actually working correctly, but it continues to log a failure with this error now matter what we try.  Scheduled jobs and manual (run now) jobs fail the same way.
