Hi,

I'm a newly employee in a company and i must to setup Backup Exce for Windows ... but i'm really lost and alone in the dark :(

in fact, my first question is:
Is it possible to assign a job to a spécific tape ?
how to do that ?

Backup Exec is actually installed with a Dell Powervault 122T (8 locations), and i would like to program
- 4 jobs for 4 days of a week (4 tapes)
- 2 jobs for 2 weeks (1 for odd weeks and 1 for even weeks) (2 tapes)
- 2 jobs for monthes (1 backup and 1 duplicate backup) (2 tapes)

Maybe it's not the good way, maybe backup exec doesn't work like that ... but how ?

Please, any help will be apreciated
Best regards

Oliver

Hi Oliver...

I think you mean 8 slots in the Powervault... Am i correct?

I would start with loading the powerwault with 8 new tapes. Make 1 job that takes a backup of all relevant files.
And see how much data and time the backup takes. (And if the backup spans multiple tapes).

Now when this is done I would deside if I can make a full backup each day or if I need to make (Father - Son backup)

I am of the school that states IF you have the tape size and the backup time window to make a full backup each day... Do that... :)

!o)))

Yes it's 8 slots in LTO-2
so 200Gb in normal state or 400Gb in compress mode

Actually i know that all relevant files are less than 1 tape ...
But in the future, i don't know ... so i prefer to envisage.

i'm really surprise to be unable to assign a slot to a set of support ...

there really is no solution to create jobs to perform what i want to do ?

thanks anyway

Hi again...

No you are not able to set a slot to a specific job...

I would still make one jobb that runs every day and then on lets say mondays take the tape that ran on friday out of the powerwault and store it somewhere safe... (What if your server room chatches fire than atleast you would one good backup to use when CEO comes to you and cries)

Why would you need multiple jobs for the backups you only need one... Now when the day comes that the backup window takes to looong to complete then I would set a father son job (Ful on fridays incremental on all other weekdays). But remember you still need to remove the ful backup after running... :)

Hello,

You can create partitions for the 8 slot library and then direct the jobs to the slots you want to. Refer to the following technotes for more information on the procedure:

Title:How to partition and manage an autoloader (robotic library) using Backup Exec 8.x, 9.x, and 10.0
http://support.veritas.com/docs/206843

Title: How to partition a loader and still be able to target a specific drive to be used for a backup operation
http://support.veritas.com/docs/241773

Additionally refer to the pages 223-225 in the Administraors manual for Backup Exec 10.0 in order to know more about the grandfather-father-son media rotation techniques. Here is the link to download the manual:

In case of any more doubts on this issue, do write back to the forum.
