Whats the best way of increasing our backup performance when backing up a large volume of small files and folders.
We get around 400mb/min for a back of our email archiving products HSM. This takes close to 4 hrs to backup under 200GB!
Using LTO5 and 6GB/SAS over 1GB network.

Flash backup is the option in Netbackup but I don't remember any option in BE which takes care of it.

Hello
When backing up too many small files the performance will decrease, Backup exec doesn't have any option to increase the performance of small file Backup. In such a case you can use Volume level backup app like BESR but it doesn't support backups on tape.
Please check the link below which explains several reasons for performance degradation.
and see step no. F

Thre really is no way to increase performance when backing up lots of small files. It has to do with the overhead of accessing each file vs streaming large files once accessed

And we have no way of backing up the entire volume instead of individual files?

Not using Backup Exec. You could use BackupExec System Recovery, a separate product which does block level backups rather than file level backups
(BESR also has greately enhanced bare-metal recovery capabilities)
