Patch installation woes

Hello!

I'm having all kind of nightmares trying to apply sp4a to my BE 9.1. The same kind of error occurs when I try and install the latest patch to version 9.0 also. I have already trawled this site/forum looking for answers. I have tried the silent install and changing the upgrade reg key value to 5 and no luck so far. I'm trying to run the patch on clean versions too. Something else that isn't right is that after the sytem starts up, the BE Server service and Job engine service don't start automatically. However, I can manually start them (takes a while though). Running 2003 SBS with all latest windows updates. I haven't installed sp1 yet. Would that help?

Many thanks in advance

Graham

I thought I'd update this thread to let the world know I've managed to get the services to start automatically after a reboot and to be of help to others that are having the same problem.

Basically, I was getting these events in the system event viewer:

7009 - Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the Backup Exec Server service to connect.

7000 - The Backup Exec Server service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

7001 - The Backup Exec Job Engine service depends on the Backup Exec Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

Although I wasn't having the same problem as descibed in the article, I applied the fix and it solved all three of the above. My personal belief of why this fix was necessary is because the server is a poor spec and couldn't cope with everything that was being asked of it at startup.

P.S. I'd still like to apply the patch though ;)

Hello Graham,

Good to know that your problem about the starting of Backup Exec services is resolved.

Now would like to know about the patch installation. Are you getting any specific error message while installing the patch ? Is there any error message ? Can u tell us, which patch exactly you are trying to install ?

Kindly update.

Regards

As stated earlier the patch I'm trying to install is sp4a for BEWS 9.1. Also stated earlier is an extract from the installation log including all errors. The installation gets near to completing then starts rolling back.

Please help.

Cheers,

Graham

Hello,

Try to run a repair database and then try running the install of SP 4a:

Revert if the issue persists.

Hi,

Thanks for your response however it did not work. Any more suggestions? My hunch is that it's something to do with SQL. Don't ask me why it's just that I've seen some weird behavior from the other two instances of the MSDE (Sharepoint & SBS Monitoring). I unistalled both of these, repaired the BE installation and the patch still did not work? Surely the extract from the log should mean something to one of you guys????

Help!!!!!!

Hi,

Is Backup Exec on an existing SQL instance or MSDE instance installed?

Did you try running "repair install" on the servert?

If not, try it:

Repairing Backup Exec 9.x and 10.x for Windows Servers

http://support.veritas.com/docs/253199

Also try:
The Backup Exec installation fails with the error "Wizard was interrupted...," but the install log (bkupinst.log) does not show the standard 'return value 3' before rolling back the operation.
