Hi Ayaz,

Running backups will always eat up some freem memory, impact the LAN if backing up servers using Remote Agent for Windows Servers, and chew up some CPU cycles.
How long this will take depends on:

1. Size of your backups
2. Speed of your backup device
3. Backing up the local server only, or via a LAN

Best thing to do is run the backup, and just keep an eye on any impact on user performance. From my side, if I miss a backup, I will run a backup during the day just to make sure I have a backup for the night before. This also assists in clearing Exchange logs, failing which Exchange would go offline.

Hope this helps?

Hi Craig

Approx size of total back up is 450 GB unless user add some more things in home folder
Backup device is LTO2 and connected with server ( no remote agent)
Yes it will use some of CPU cycle

As you said you will run during the day time so i hope i can try as well

Just to let you know there is only 20 user online

Would you still suggest me to go ahead
As i am desperated to see backup exec backup my whole server

HI AyazHOda,

Of course it affects performance,.
Users will find delay,
SQL performance will be slow, Emai also.
Remember, both backup and users may want to open same file at same time, but only one can do it, the other sholud wait.

Hi Ayaz,

Your backups should be important, but not to the point of stopping your users from working properly.
I would suggest that you run your backup now. Local server backups are going to be a lot quicker...just keep an eye on the users if they start getting disconnected from Exchange.

OK !

Job runnning now, current Job rate is 530MB/min  time started GMT 9:30

One more question what must i do if user start shouting at me, should i hold the backup job for couple of minutes or shut them up

which is more important User support or backup

If it is 1 user, I don't worry about it. It is when there are multiple users who are being disconnected from Exchange/SQL/files and folders etc. that I cancel the job.
However, backups are extremely important to me, and I run them nonetheless. Just let the IT manager (assuming you aren't the IT manager) what is happening.
When you get to Exchange your backups should speed up a bit...
