Having worked in IT for more years than I care to think about, I can certainly remember labelling tapes in the 70s and 80s. I can also remember being able to rename them without losing the data on the tape or having to fully reinitialise the tape. I am sure it must be possible to do this via Veritas Backup Exec 10d but have not managed to find how to do that yet.
