Was the RAWFS volume mounted prior to the restore ?

Follow this KB article instead - https://support.software.dell.com/netvault-backup/kb/79991

I believe, you'll have to specify the volume id as well.

This appeared to have been fixed in BE 2010 R3 SP2 (read below), but if you're getting this issue on SP4, I'd recommend opening a call with Symantec and getting them to resolve it.

Thanks!

What is the model of the device that you are using and is the dedup function enabled?

As per EMC, "You can back up Celerra Data Deduplication-enabled file systems by using Celerra NVB and restore in full. However, Celerra does not support a single-file or file-by-file restore of deduplicated files from NVB backups. EMC recommends the use of NVB backups of deduplicated file systems as part of a strategy where a single-file or file-by-file restore is done from locally or remotely replicated SnapSure checkpoints and not from 'tape."

 Reference :- http://www.emc.com/collateral/hardware/white-papers/h6065-achieve-storage-effficiency-celerra-dedup-...

You can either run a full restore as per - https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.TECH216837

Or else, the backup type must be Dump instead of VBB under NDMP Settings of the backup job.

It's a EMC VNXe3100 and yesdedup is enabled but in options we have enable file history checked which should allow you to file restores

If its a NVB backup, then it's a Celerra limitation which prevents single file restore when DeDupe is enabled.

Have you looked at the EMC documentation which I posted earlier confirming this is expected behavior ?

Its a backup of a CIFS share. in the options for backup it specifies VBB

If I do the full restore I'm not sure waht a RAWFS volume is.

I tried to do a full restore to a new share it writes a few folders and files to it and then kicks ot the error

This is another limitation of EMC, VBB & DeDupe.

Only restore allowed is a full destructive restore. This will delete any existing data on the volume during the restore. Such a restore requires a Raw File System (RAWFS i.e. unformatted) to be created prior to the restore.

DUMP backup/restore is slower than VBB, however it allows for a single file restore. Any specific reason for choosing VBB in the backup settings ?

Nope I inherited this from others I did see in the EMC doc that if you use the dedup option sanp shots should be enabled

I truely beleive this is the first time someone tried a restore

Now trying to figure out how to build the RAWFS on the EMC

Thanks

Restore to Path

/

Any help would be apreciated

At first you cannot restore to root.

Restore to /restore this will make the trick.

Before doing so you should check that the folder actually was created before on the emc device.

best regards,

Still no luck with restore to RAWFS EMC NDMP.

Now EMC wants to Vertitas involved to resolve issue but support has expired

As much reading I have been doing it's hard to find someone who has the same issue

One thing for sure we have changed the backups to TYPE=DUMP and are now able to restore files

But still have issue with recovering files from the backups with TYPE=VBB

Restoring data to //10.10.70.26:10000/restore/data.

Storage Media #1: " Media created 10/9/2015 9:00:00 PM "

With a VBB type backup, you cannot restore file-by-file. Are you doing a file or a complete volume level restore ?

B-Rock
Level 3

Yes complete in the Debug I copied this.

EMC - Restore File List - START
BENGINE:  [12/04/15 13:26:30] [3752]     [loops]              - Full Set Restore Selected. Turning off DAR.
BENGINE:  [12/04/15 13:26:30] [3752]     [loops]              - destination_dir: /v16194/
BENGINE:  [12/04/15 13:26:30] [3752]     [loops]              - EMC - Restore File List - END

EMC has created a RAWFS on the the filer for the restore to go to but it doesn't seem to make a difference what we put in redirection we get the same error every time

Below is what the RAWFS looks

Are you following this KB article for the restore - https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.TECH216837  ?

Specifically this line -

Choose redirect restore. Manually type the path to the RAWFS file system as browsing to a RAWFS file system is not possible (e.g. \\VNXDevice.domain:10000\\raw-fs-vol-name)
NOTE: You will need to have two backslashes \\ between the device name and the RAWFS volume.

Yes I have tried with the slashes both ways and still get same error

With slashes // job fails with NDMP error after about 6 minutes

NDMP Log Message: Cannot restore to root filesystem /.

File Redirection

Redirect file sets: Yes
Restore to drive://10.10.70.26:10000//restore
Server logon account:ndmp
Restore to path:
Path logon account:

With slashes \\ restore job fails right away
Redirect file sets: Yes
Restore to drive:\\10.10.70.26:10000\\restore
Server logon account:ndmp
Restore to path:
Path logon account:

Use // (The KB article requires a modification)

Was the RAWFS volume mounted prior to the restore ?

Follow this KB article instead - https://support.software.dell.com/netvault-backup/kb/79991

I believe, you'll have to specify the volume id as well.

That did the trick we were able to restore the data to the RAWFS then EMC did their magic

Under file redirection

//10.10.70.26:10000//.celerra_vol_16194

And Blank in Restore Path

I can't even begin to tell you how much we appreciate you help on the problem

Next time your in Raleigh,NC look me up I'll buy you a BEER

Again Many Thanks
