Seagate STT220000A Tape Drive Restore Error

Peter_Dubar
Level 3
When I run a backup this is reported as ok and verified over 3GB data.
When I try to restore any file from any tape used I get errors concerning data cannot be consistently read from tape.
I have used cleaning tapes, plus different tapes & a different STT220000A drive with the same error.

Any suggestions??

Hi,

Please check whether any errors are logged in the System Event Log especially 7,9,11,15.

Try running a backup and restore with NTBackup and verify whether the same problem occurs.

If the device is listed as "tested" in HCL then you may install latest Veritas drivers.

"Backup Exec 10.0 for Windows Servers Standalone Drives Hardware Compatibility List (HCL)"

http://support.veritas.com/docs/274347

and

"Backup Exec 10.0 for Windows Servers Robotic Library Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) (includes Tested Drives) "

http://support.veritas.com/docs/274348

Hope it helps.

That is a old Travan drive. I got riid of it because tapes only lasted 20 backups reliably. By that I mean the ability to restore. I was cleaning the drive every time to extend reliability. I replaced it with a HP DAT 40i. I have heard from others that restore success is 30-40% on the Travans. Another solution is Exabyte VXA-2.

Thanks for the info.
I will check the logs now that I have cleared them down for easier reading!
The hardware I am using is on HCL;
Seagate STT220000A / Hornet NS20 TR5 Seagate^STT20000A IDE/ATAPI TR5 Tested

I dont fancy having to shell out more cash on hardware....
I shall try out the event logs and see how I go as the drive is listed on Veritas HCL as tested

My last 2 restore operations have worked after setting retention of tape to be used on backup jobs
- however on the 3rd tape i tried to use the restore failed
Event ID error 11 returned -
The driver detected a controller error on \device\tape0

Any ideas what this actually means??

-Event ID 11 generally signifies controller errors. These errors are generally caused by hardware that is not functioning correctly.

Please refer following link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q154690

- Also the tape drive "STT220000A" is listed in HCL
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/274347.htm

Please install latest VRTS drivers:
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/275676.htm

-Also make sure that the firmware is up to date.

Thanks for the link with updated tape drivers.
Installed but still same error.

Upgrading to Win2K sp4 to see if this resolves issues.

I am also waiting for BIOS upgrade from Award Modular (just in case)

If these things dont work then it might be a case of shelling out more on different hardware after 1st contacting Veritas Support for recommendations.....

Hi,

Please also check the following link for event id 11 as suggested earlier:

Please refer following link:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q154690

You can also update the drivers for SCSI controller.

As per our previous reply, marking the case as "assumed answered" and moving it to "answered questions" pool.

No answer has been forth coming that doesn't require me spending more money on hardware that is in the HCL

Hi,

to isolate the cause of the issue, please try running backup and restore operation with NT Backup and observe the results.

You can also test backup to backup to disk folder and then test restore!

If this does not help, please let us know the exact error, which you are getting in job log and also if you are still getting event id 7, 9, 11 or 15?

I have installed a secondary slave hdd and have no problems when I back up or restore from this.

Do I need to uninstall Backexec for NTBackup to work as it doesn't seem to want to fire up since installing BackupExec?

Hello Peter,

To get NT backup working, you will need to stop Backup Exec Services first. After doing that, you could try backing up with NT Backup and let us know of the results!

Thanks in advance!

i tried stopping all services.
NT Backup takes ages to load then says it cannot find any new media even though i have introduced a brand new tape.
NT backup was working before i implemented Backup Exec, i thought by using a proper product for disaster recovery i would have less issues.

Please let me know what else to try - by the way the scheduled backup jobs are still working fine in Backup Exec.
