Hi,
We are currently using BE 12.5. Our backup resources are Windows files share data, Oracle backup, SQL backup, Exchange Server etc. The Backup hardware is Dell 124T DLT VS160.
Now, we have virtualization and SAN. We need to backup directly from SAN instead of nomal lan backup. Planning for a better solution. I would like to hear from experts what should i consider here. Your recommendations and suggestions are highly appreciated.
Thank you

Hi,
You should firstly be looking at upgrading to at least BE 2010 R3. You'd have to buy the BE 2012 agents and media server license, but ask for a downgrade. THe SYmantec licensing department can assist further.
That said, this is what you should be aiming for:
1. Backups using your SAN with Backup Exec SAN SSO:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO24287
This gives you a LAN-free backup, especially if your media server has access to the SAN. If you have a tape library attached to the SAN things can run faster still.
2. Backup Exec AVVI
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH63804
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH130945
This will allow you to backup your VMs fully, preferably to disk first before duplicating to tape.
These are the 2 things you should be aiming for...
Thanks!

When you say you have virtualization and SAN:
a) Are you using Hyper-V or VMware?
b) are the virtual machine files (vhd, vmdk etc) held on a SAN disk or have you represented SAN based disks into virtual machines where the SAN based disk is not virtual?

Hi,
Thanks for all the answers, sorry for delayed response...
We are using XEN, but will move to VMW. so you can say VMW.
All the VMdisks are LUNs in the SAN.
I prefer the appliance than the software solution. I would like to know, when one should use Netbackup appliance over a BE appliance?
Thanks.

Thanks for that information,
So, BE appliance could help me to do my goals to backup Windows VMs, Oracle, Linux, SQL, EDB etc?
Are there any comparison between netbackup and be appliances? Thanks for your support.
