Level 2

We have the following;
Server 2012 w/Hyper-V installed
1 VM So far
HP MSL4048 Tape backup
BUE 2014 SP1

Archive plan:
Daily
Weekly: Store for Month
Monthly: store for year

Can anyone suggest a standard config for this: ie how many parttitions, Media Vault, etc

how often should we backup the appliance and VM

Hi,

This is a pretty open-ended question, but let me give some sort of feedback from my perspective:

1. Partitions - you can partition the library how you want...that MSL4048 has 48 slots, so partition for Daily, Weekl, Monthly and Yearly for instance with enough slots per partition depending on how often you run each of those jobs. You can also just leave the library unpartitioned and rather let DLM do what it needs to in order to manage how data is appended to the tapes, or tapes are overwritten. This is more of an admin choice.

2. For each type of job you'd like to run (Daily, Weekly, Monthly & Yearly), you'd have media sets managed by DLM which expires media as, and when dictated by the Append/OPP settings of that media set.

3. Append/OPP settings - your settings would reflect how long you want to retain data for. Read the TN below on how DLM works:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/symantec-backup-exec-2014-blueprint-data-lifecycle-...

4. How often you should backup the appliance (?) and VM - every night to be honest. You don't want a situation where you don't have data to restore. And depending on when you set your Daily/Weekly etc backups to run you would on specific days, your only other choice is between FULL, INCR or DIFF, depending on the amount of data being backed up.

Hope this helps!

Thanks!
