Switching on compression HP C5718A tapes

Hi,

we have bought Veritas Backup Exec 10.0 last week. I tried the demo version before. And everything seemed to work.
I do a full backup on tape once a week (on Friday).
The tapes are original DDS-4 HP C5718A ones (20 GB uncompressed,/40 GB compressed).
The tape drive is a HP StorageWorks DAT 40.

On Friday I got the key and installed it. Then the first full backup after buying Veritas Backup Exec 10.0 for Windows Small Business Servers (that started on Friday night) now prompts me for a new tape. On the first tape there are about 21,4 GB and I set the option "hardware compression" in the backup settings.
There is no jumper on the tape to change the compression rate only a switch to change read/write rights.

Can it really be, that the tape is already full?
What really makes me a bit worried is that the tape drive and the tapes itself are recognized as "Seagate 2005/...." ones.
Is there anything else I can do to get more capacity on the tapes?

Thanks in advance for your help.

S.J.

Hi Sandra,

You can try using Software compression and see if there is any change in the amount of data being backed up.

Check out the following Technote:

Also have you tried installing the latest Veritas tape drivers.
