I have two tape devices that can be seen in Back Up Exec as a Device, but any jobs i send to it fails... see error message below
Backup Exec Alert: Job Failed
(Server: "TOUCH-BACKUP") (Job: "Inventory Drive 00558") Inventory Drive 00558 -- The job failed with the following error: The Backup Exec job engine system service is not responding.
Any ideas? as i am at a loss

In BE console, under Devices tab right click on the server name->select pause and then wait
for 30 secs. Again right click on the server uncheck pause.
What version of Backup Exec you are using?

Restart all your BE services. If any of them failed to restart, check the Windows Eventlog to see what is the error.

Restart all the BE services, Make sure the media server is not in a paused state.
Post the version of Backup Exec being used and make n model of the tape device

Restarted all Services, none fail - but when i run an inventory on a tape device it runs then queues. When i click in to the status of this, it states that the server is paused.
It eventually gives up and in the Alerts it tells me
The job failed with the following error: The Backup Exec job engine system service is not responding.

I would recommend you to upgrade to BE2010 R3 if you have a valid contract with Symantec you
will get a free upgrade license key.
