Whenever I perform a tape inventory the cleaning count is increased by one on my cleaning tape when it is inventoried. The tape is designated as cleaning media.

Hello,

What type of device are you using? What drivers have you installed? Are there any errors in the Windows event log when this happens? Have you also tried cleaning using the device manager?

Ensure that you have defined a cleaning job as per the steps in the tn below:

Thank you. Everything else was done correctly except the "Cleaning Slot" check box was not checked. Is there any way to reset the number of cleanings on this tape? It has only been used for actual cleaning 4 or 5 times, not 13 as it states now. Also, does a cleaning job need to be scheduled periodically or will the drive "clean itself" when it needs it with out having a job defined?

Hello Patrick,

Yes, you can reset the number of cleanings. Refer to the steps given in the technotes below in order to do so:

How to reset the statistics on the cleaning slot
http://support.veritas.com/docs/240836

How to reset the cleaning statistics for a standalone tape device in Backup Exec 7.x, 8.x, 9.x and 10.x
http://support.veritas.com/docs/231561

You will need to schedule the cleaning jobs after a certain interval, eg. one week. Refer to the link below that will guide you in this process:
