Tapes jumping from one Media set to another

Hello

Having a problem here. We have two media sets. I'll call them Media set A and Media set B. Seems that the tapes are jumping from media set A to media set B and staying there. Anyone else has seen this? I'm connected to a VTL...

Thanks for the help.

This may be normal, depending upon your overwrite protection settings and device settings within the backup job:

If a tape belongs to media set A, and has surpassed the overwrite protection time, and you create a backup job designating Media Set B that is pointing to this tape, then this tape will switch to Media Set B. - Tapes will hop into other media sets if they are overwritable.

To prevent this behavior, extend the overwrite protection time, or partition the library (if using a tape library) and define the job to use only specific tapes.

Hello,

Well, this depends on how the Overwrite Protection Period and Append Period are configured for the media sets. After allocating a particular media to a media set, run a overwrite job, so that the media set's properties are inherited by the media. Also please refer to the following document to know more about Overwrite Protection Period and Append Period.

In addition ot the other responses make sure that you have selected "Use ovewritable media in the target media set before scratch media" (Tools/Options/Media Mangement I think)

The default is to use Scratch first, so Backup Exec will grab the "oldest" tape it can see first (the one that has been in ovewrite status longest) regardless of the media set it belongs to.

With the "use target media set..." option, it will look at all the tapes is can see and select the oldest overwritable volume in the target set first, and if it cannot find any, will then look for any overwritable media
