Unable to attach to one of the drives" e000848c error

I was getting an "Unable to attach to one of the drives" (a000848c HEX or e000848c HEX) error message
during the nightly back-ups that the company runs. The error is occurring with drives
on an Exchange 5.5 server.( The Exchange Mailboxes &
The Exchange Public information Store.) Some of the drives on the Exchange Server are being backed up correctly. I have checked to see that all of the backup exec services are running on the Exchange Server. The system login account
on the TAPE BACK UP SERVER & THE EXCHANGE Server HAVE not been changed. Please note that NO
CONFIGURATION CHANGES WERE MADE ON ANY OF OUR SERVERS. I updated the software to 9.1 and also implemented a proposed solution to this problem from
a Veritas employee named Mani. That solution did not work. The error that I am getting after the upgrade to 9.1 is still - "Unable to attach to one of the drives" (a000848c HEX or e000848c) I would really appreciate any help on this matter.

Thank you very much;

Don

Which drive(s) specifically fail? If the error log isn't clear, backup one drive at a time til youo know.

You are not trying to backup the M: drive are you?

Ken;

Thank you for the response. No, we do not back up the M drive, The Exchange Mailboxes & the Public information store will not back up. Our back-ups have been running fine
for over 2 years & suddenly the mailboxes will no longer back up. We have made no changes to any of our servers.
No system logins logins have been changed or altered. When I try to set up a new test backup with the mailboxes
only, I get an access denied error. I have tried to create several login accounts to access the mailboxes with no sucess. This really has me stumped.

Hmm sure sounds like a rights problem.

If the tape drive was on the Exchange server, I'd suggest trying to backup Exchange using NTBackup, but that won't work across a network.

If you logon to the media server as the BackupExec service account and run ExchangeAdmin can you access everything?

Just for grins, setup a new ID in AD and make that ID an Exchange Admin, then from the Backup Selection screen, right click on the Exchange Store and select "attach as" and give it the new ID. Then try another Exchange backup

Try using a new account to select the Exchange mailboxes, ensure that it has sufficient permissions as per the following document:

Hello;

Thank you for the proposed solutions. We are
not using AD & the I have set up an email box
with the correct rights as per the last solution
& the problem is not resolved. Thank you for any help that you can provide.

This just happened to us last week. We had checked to remove the Admin account that we were using from the Global address list. This account must be in the Global Address list to be used by Veritas. There are a couple of tech support documents relating to this (sorry I closed it before writing it down). Basically it is on the Advanced tab of Exchange tasks in Active Users on an Exchange server. Just uncheck the Hide from Address List box.

Hope this is your problem too. We also had done nothing in the way of account names/passwords during that time and had been backing up successfully for quite some time.
