I am unable to start BUE 12.5 on my Windows 2003 Server. When I try to go into the app I get the following error message: "The BackUp Exec Server system service is not responding. The service is either not running or not installed".
I ahve tried starting the service and it just sits on STARTING and does nothing else. The following sewrvices are also not running but I am guessing they are dependent on this service:
BackUp Exec Agent Browser
BackUp Exec Job Engine
Any ideas guys?

Dave, if you've played around with BE 2012, then go for it. And then it's best to just install it clean.
If not, I'd then recommend reinstalling BE 12.5 and upgrading to BE 2010 R3 with SP2. BE 2012 R2 is in beta phase and will be released sometime in the future, and it might be best to hold on for that.
Either way, installing BE 12.5 and upgrading to BE 2010 R3 must see you get copies of your Data/Catalogs folders first before doing the upgrade.

Hi,
Do the following:
1. Stop all running BE services, including the SQL service.
2. Open up Taks Manager and kill off any remaining BE services. Then verify that all the services show as stopped.
3. Open up BEutility.exe and after right-clicking your server, choose the option to start up the services.
If you can (assuming you haven't), make sure the media server is also up to date with any available patches.
Thanks!

No joy unfortunately guys, still unable to start the services mentioned:
BackUp Exec Agent Browser
BackUp Exec Job Engine
BackUp Exec Server service sits on STARTING....

Is it worth trying a reinstall of the app?

Did a reboot and tried the procedure again and I get this:
Performing grant of login for BEDB database.

2 other things you can try here:
1. Make sure your current BESA isn't locked out in Active Directory.
2. Create a new account with the same rights as your current BESA, then open up BEutility.exe and change the account used to this new 1. Once done, BEutility.exe will then start up the services, and post back with an update.
Thanks!

Also, using BEUtility, if you choose change database access & then grant access, does it complete successfully ?
And is the SQL instance under services.msc running under a local system account ?

OK guys I created a new BESA and then did the Change DataBase Access to this new account and GRANT Access and it worked performed that fucntion without error. I then went into each service and changed their logins to this new acount and it successfully started the following services:
BackUpExecAgentAccelerator
BackUpExexmediaDeviceMedia Service
But did NOT start the following services:
BackupExecRPC Service
BackupExecJobEngine Service
BackupExecAgentBrowser
Shows this in the Operation Progress Status window:
Starting Services

...and your AV isn't perhaps blocking those services at all?

Have disabled Symantec AV temporarily and am now restarting the services:

SQL instance under services.msc IS running under a local system account

Hi Guys,
Is it worth my while uninsatlling the BUE and reinstalling it?
06-29-2012 04:07 AM
No reason why not too...just grab copies of your Data/Catalogs folders so that you can recover any data you need to keep.
Otherwise you can start off from scratch and then populate the BEDB again by catalogging tapes again.

I have installers for 12.5, 2010 AND 2012, would I be better off going straight to 2012?
