Upgrading from 10.d and 9.1 to 11d

Ok! Here is my Question. Need to upgrade 3 servers one is a Backup server and 2 are SQL servers, Do I run remote on the 2 SQL Servers after upgradeing  the Backup server? OR can I just upgrade the 2 SQL servers and still be able to back them up the way they are?

A v11d media server can talk to a v10d remote agent, but not to a v9 RAWS

You do need to eventually upgrade all your remote agents to v11d though, to remain legal
