VHD Backup

Ive tried baking up a physical physical server that hosts multiple Virtual Servers. I have been unsuccessful in actually
backing up the VHD's on this server. The backup completes with an error. Does the advanced open file option need
to be used to backup a VHD for a virtual server that is currently running or am I way off base here?

Those *.vhd files are obviously in use, so AOFO should enable you to backup the files. Depending on which version of BE you're using, it should either need a license key (like 11D), or come free (like 12.5).
Have  you not considered getting the virtual machine license?
