Hi

Media Server OS: win2008 R2

BEWS version: BE 2012 1CAS  2MMS

Remote Servers: yes

Remote Server OS: VMware esx 5win2008 sql and win2003

Backup Device: Dedup folder OST datadomain

1. Trying to perform a vm restore and it is failing with this error

V-79-57344-38277 - Unable to open a disk of the virtual machine.

2. If we give administrator role to BESA account in vmware vcenter then the restore works
3. we have a separate role for backup exec account which is been given the rights mentioned below.

Datastore Allocate space
Global        Licenses
Network        Assign Network
Resource Assign virtual  machine to resource pool
Virtual Machine Configuration add existing disk
Virtual Machine Configuration add new disk
Virtual Machine Configuration add or remove device
Virtual Machine Configuration Advanced Settings
Virtual Machine Configuration change CPU count
Virtual Machine Configuration change resource
Virtual Machine Configuration disk change tracking
Virtual Machine Configuration disk lease
Virtual Machine Configuration host usb device
Virtual Machine Configuration Memory configuration
Virtual Machine Configuration modify device settings
Virtual Machine Configuration raw device
Virtual Machine Configuration reload from path
Virtual Machine Configuration remove disk
Virtual Machine Configuration Rename
Virtual Machine Configuration reset quest information
Virtual Machine Configuration settings
Virtual Machine Configuration Swapfile placement
Virtual Machine Configuration unlock virtual machine
Virtual Machine Interaction Power off
Virtual Machine Interaction Power On
Virtual Machine Inventory Create new
Virtual Machine Inventory Register
Virtual Machine Inventory Remove
Virtual Machine Inventory Unregister
Virtual Machine Provisioning Allow read-only disk access
Virtual Machine Provisioning allow virtual machine download
Virtual Machine State Create snapshot
Virtual Machine State remove Snapshot
Virtual Machine State revert to snapshot

4. While we run the restore job it shows it has created the new vm in the vcenter console
5. but restore job fails if we use a customised role for backup exec system account
6. rights have given using this article  http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH130255
7. can anyone suggest if this is by design for BE2012 that we should use administrator role only

Hi Just to update,

We have changed our Role to use VCB ROLE in Vcenter console. And now backups and restore both works.

Thanks for all your help on this.

Is the restore working when assigning the Administrators role in vCenter ?

Since you are restoring a complete VM, is the 'old' VM still in place?
If restoring to the same name you can have a duplicate VM.

Answer: Yes

Answer: Yes

Answer: I am restoring it as a new VM with a new name

As I have mentioned in the main my post that it is able to create vm in vcenter console but the restore fails and no vmdk is stored on the datastore.

I think you would have to add some more rights to the vcenter account. At least some Datastore rights.

You can try, open the vSphere client and logon with your service account to the vCenter server. Try to add a VM, if that fails the complete restore VM would also fail.
