Why are the backups so slow?

I know that our network may have its limitations. We have 20 offices in the area, and half of them are connected with a T1, the rest with a halfT.

Why could we only be getting a rate of 3MB/min? It just doesn't make sense. At this rate, I won't even be able to back up everything in one weekend.

Is there something that I haven't selected that would speed up the backup?

Well, T1 is rated at 1.54Mb/sec, so that could be a large part of the problem.

Absolute max throughput (which, of course, you will never see) is just over 11MB/min, so your 3MB/min is about 25% of max, which is a little on the low side, but not too bad.Message was edited by:

Thanks for the swift reply, Ken.

So I guess it is going to take all weekend to back up my data.

I just tried a test during business hours, and I'm getting 3MB/min. I'm not sure why I can't get any better than that after hours, when nothing else is running.

Hello,

You may also check the following settings:
- Check that the resources that you are backing up are not fragmented. Refer the following technote.
Title:
How to correct slow backup performance, slow virus or pre-job scans, and agent initialization problems on fragmented Windows NT, Windows 2000, and Windows 2003 server partitions

- Antivirus applications may also affect backup performance.

- Try copying around 1 GB of data from remote destination to your Media server. This is to verify if there are problems with the network.

- Are you backing up to a tape or a disk? You may also refer the following technotes.
Title:
Reasons why the data throughput rate can be slower than the theoretical maximum when backing up to tape media
