Windows 2003 Server BUE. What do you need to back up XP workstations via the net?

We purchased a copy of BUE with the Dell server that arrived early last year.    Version 12.5.  We planned on using the software to back up server files, as well as files on workstations located on the network.  For the workstations, we created hidden shares, and then told BUE to back up the files in those shares.

With past Dell BUE packages, we installed the BUE Agent for Windows on the workstations to help speed the backup process.

Come to find out, Dell did not include licenses for Agent for Windows with the software that we purchased.  Instead, they gave us Desktops and Laptops (whatever that is).  Not wanting to incur more expense, we deinstalled the Remote agent off of the workstations, and expected that BUE would just back up the files using normal shared file transfers.

The backup job for the WS fails, and it seems that BUE is still looking for the remote agents on the workstations even though it's not there.  Dell told us that you can't back up workstsations without the remote agent software.

Is this true?  Is there a way to back up XP workstations without using Remote Agent?  If not, do we really have to spend another $700 to buy the Agent software for 12 workstations?

Thanks
Chris

yes, it's required the remote agent. You can double confirm with support team on this matter.

...and to add onto the fact that all you need is the RAWS agent licensed per XP workstation you want to back up, BEWS 12.5 comes with 5 free licenses for Desktop and Laptop Option which is another option to look into...depending on the number of user PCs you want to back up.
You can verify this with the BEWS Software Compatibiility Matrix:

 I would do the following:

Purchase a copy of Backup Exec System Recovery desktop edition, about $60.  You can then image the system to a network share and backup the network share.  BESR will allow you to restore to different hardware and will give insteneaous file level restore capability from the image

Hey Roger,

You need to have RAWS installed on all the xp workstations, but you really don't have to purchase a single RAWS license for it.!!!

You need to purchase RAWS for every server which has got server OS installed on it. for exchange windows server 2000, windows server 2003.

In order to backup  client operating systems, you really don't need any licenses, just install RAWS and you are good to go.

however, you will have to purchase a license for client operating systems like Vista and windows 7 though.

but in your case , you have windows xp, so no need to purchase licneses.

@ CraigV - Correct me if I am wrong.

To backup a server/workstation, you need a license. You don't need to buy the license if you already have a license for RAWS, but by installing RAWS on a Win XP PC, you will be breaking the terms of the licensing agreement.
Which is why you should look at using DLO instead...each media server you install comes with 5 free licenses, which allows those PCs to back up to network storage that they will have access to, via the server.
