backups hanging because of extended ascii characters

I'm backing several snap servers that our design department uses. Some of the file names are making the backup jobs hang. I double click on the hung job and noticed that it's trying to backup a fonts folder. The folder has this character at the end of the name ƒ also some of the other folder names begin with * also ocassionally I have seen / and \ in the file name as well. How can i get around this besides having to go through 40 snap servers and rename everything? Thanks.

Since when does the problem persist? Does the backup only hang on strange characters? Try to exclude the files with strange characters and see if the job succeeds. Do you get any error message when the job hangs thus? Also check if there are any alerts in the alerts tab in backup exec.
