can't inventory the tape drives

kha
Level 4

I am using Backup Exec 2010, Media Server: version 13.0 Rev. 2896 (32bit)

Quantum Super Loader 3 as backup tape library

It sees all the drives in 16 slots.  However, when I do the inventory on pre-existing drive, the job remained as Ready; Onhold

If I do inventory for the new inserted tape (which says "overwritable"), the job just say running, Bye Count is empty, Job Rate is empty, Percent Complete empty.  It looks to me it is not running as it is indicated.

I try to do unlock the Media Server - the job remains as Ready; On Hold. Tried to "run now" the job, it doesn't change the job status.

I've tried to reboot the media server, paused and unpaused server, didn't help.

Please HELP

Hello,

this looks like the same issue that was resolved by Vivek Jain in this post:

 https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/be-2010-cannot-inventory-import-or-erase

If you have HotFix 354913 uninstall it through Add/Remove programs. After rebooting the server retry the job

If it still doesnt work refer to this link - http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH126625

Thanks

Hi Imosla,

I uninstalled the HF 354912 through Add/Remove Programs.  Rebooted the server, retried to do inventory of 1 tape that we just put in yesterday with "overwritable" status.  Still the same problem, it says "running" but 0 byte count, empty Job rate, empty percent complete.  Ran for more than 11 minutes and looks like it will never complete.

From the DEVICES tab of BE -> see the Quantum device pool keeps showing "in use" on and off.

I follow the TECH126625, opened the BEutility.exe, it showed All Media Server as running
On DEVICES tab of BE -> the media server is NOT paused either.

Cancelled my inventory job -> do step 3, 4, 5, 6 from TECH126625.  Still can't do inventory for 1 tape. Same problem persists.

1) You are on the original BE 2012. I would suggest that you upgrade to BE 2010 R3 which is the latest version. Your existing licence keys will work.  You can download BE 2010 R3 from either the fileconnect site or

http://trialware.norton.com/files/fc/Backup_Exec_2010_13.0.5204_MultiPlatforms_Multilingual_DVD.iso

After your upgrade, do not forget to run LiveUpdate a couple of time to update it to SP4 and the latest hotfixes.

After you have upgraded to R3 SP4, push out the remote agent again.

2) Make sure that your library appears in the Windows Device Manager as an Unknown Medium Changer with a Microsoft driver.  If it has a Quantum driver, change it using the procedure in the documents below

Is this a new install?  Or did this used to work?

An inventory job doesn't have statistics like a backup job, so you won't get a byte count, job rate, or percent complete.

Do backup jobs run?

I am surprised that unpausing hte server didn't fix this problem, see http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH63380  for more details.  That is another good reason to get your system updated.
