external backups using backup exec 2010

Hi we are wondering how it is recommended to do backups to external drives with backup exec 2010 and server side dedupe option?  Currently we use a backup solution which does full backup and compare every night and we are looking into switching to backup exec 2010 to do this but the files stored on our iSCSI target appear to be a lot of 256 megabyte BIN files and appear to be not easy to transfer to external storage.

What would you guys recommend that we do for our external backup drives using backup exec 2010?  Originally we wanted to do a full backup every Friday and store only the incrementals on external drives during the week and one full backup on a separate drive at the end of the week.

Thanks

Hi Dennis,

I'd start by reading the decupe best practice guide below:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO21767

Once done, get hold of the BE Admin Guide for a bit more background info.

Thanks!

Basically DeDuplication is a disk storage mechanism, you can use Optimized Duplication to duplicate the DeDuplicated data to a DeDuplication store on another media server (in a different site to). However if you want to move the data to tape for vaulting purposes then you run a Duplicate Job within Backup Exec to achieve this.

Note: You should not attempt to copy files from with the Duplication Storage Folder itself

Hi we have the deduplication store fine on an iSCSI target right now.

Now what we want to do is backup from the iSCSI target to an external drive during the daytime and include a full backup to that external drive as well as incrementals leading up to but not also including the next full backup.

So my data path is suppose to basically look like this:

[company project drive SIFs] -> [iSCSI Deduplication target on Synology] -> [External USB hard disk drive]

And right now, this is how it is working:

[company project drive SIFs] -> [iSCS Deduplication target on Synology]

We want to go from the iSCSI target to external usb hard drive.
