huge shadow copy components, Can we purge?

Hi I have a server 2003 with following drives:
C - 25gb - 2gb free
D - 40gb - 23gb free
F - 558gb - 77gb free
G - 70gb - 23gb free

I use Symantec Backup exec to backup this server. The Symantec backup Job summary shows bytes count as "584,940,491,503 bytes" for Shadow?Copy?Components.

I checked each 4 drives and none of them has Shadow Copies enabled.

How am I getting such a huge size for the shadow copy components? Can I purge it?

I will be grateful for your support.

Is this a DFSR file server?

DFSR data get backed up under shadow copy components

Expand shadow copy components, in backup and restore jobs and check what exactly taking so much space.

yes this server used to have DFS share but it does not exist anymore.

Under the Shadow Copy components there is a
User Data -- DFS Replication -- DfrsReplicatedFolders -- MyFileShares

Before this server used to have MyFileShares with lots of contents. I have disabled the shares but data still exist on this server. But I havent selected this shares in the backup selection list.

How can I get rid of this being backedup as Shadow Copy Components.

Check under "View by details" tab under the selection list to ensure these shares are not selected

I have checked the View Selection Details and they are not there; only contents of C & D drive are selected whereas these Shares are in F and G drive.

In that case you need to make sure DFSR is been removed gracefully from this server.

As a work aroud, u may uncheck user state data -dfsr, in the existing or new job.

On View Selection Details I have noticed some of my servers has:

Shadow Copy Components
   + Service State

My file server has:

Shadow Copy Components
   + Service State
   - User Data
      - Distributed File System Replication
         - DfsrReplicatedFolders
           - StaffShares

Whereas the one which has huge shadow components has

Shadow Copy Components
   + Service State
   - User Data
      - Distributed File System Replication

If I just exclude "Distributed File System Replication" from the selection list; it will remove "Service State" aswell. Is service state same as "System state" which is required when restoring the server.

Service state is not same as "System state", however still imp at time of Server DR.

I guess best opt would be to remove DFSR completely from this server and then create a new job in BE.
