imported media gets overwritable

hi

We backup from media server with bews 2010r2 and restore data to DR site where media server is 12.5.

We inventory media at DR site , we find media set "imported media" and media is overwritable.

As per imported media set media should be overwrite protected , we send overwrite protected media to DR site.

In above senario on both media servers , settings from media management is Partial - protect only allocated media

Please help me out with cause and solution for this issue.

    Thanks & regards

The media overwrite settings are maitained in the Backup Exec database not on the media themselves and as you have two completely different servers the second server will not know the overwrite protection in use on the first server.

As such if you don't want the DR site server to overwrite the media then slide the physical tabs across on the tape cartridges, change that Partial setting OR whenever you import media into the DR site, immediately move the media to a set with a long overwrite protection on the second server.

Oh and and BTW, it's not recommended to try and recover data backup up on a newer version of Backu Exec with an older version - most scernarios will probably work, but we don't do any testing for that configuration and you might experience some limitations.

By default, imported media have an overwrite protection period of Infinite, but can still be overwritten if the media overwrite protection level is set to Partial or None. Change the overwrite protection level to FULL and see if that helps.

Hi Colin,

I do agree, thanks for the same.

This is not true.  By default, the Overwrite Protection Level is set to Partial, thus any imported media is overwriteable.  An imported media will only have an infinite protection period if the Overwrite Protection Level is set to Full.

Refer to BE admin guide Page no 221.

Also BE protects imported media from overwriting even with PARTIAL overwrite protection level.

Thanks.....

Are you saying that what you have quoted from the Admin Guide is wrong?  How is BE going to protect the imported media when it is overwriteable (see figure below)?  At most, you can set it to prompt you before overwriting the imported media.

I never said BE protects imported media from overwriting even if it is Overwritable. With NONE OPlevel even if imported media is not overwritable, it will get overwritten.

"Backup Exec protects allocated and imported media from being overwritten when full or partial overwrite protection is used. However, if necessary, you can allow allocated and imported media to be overwritten by Backup Exec before the data overwrite protection period expires, and without setting the media overwrite protection level to None." from admin guide 232 page

Sorry, I must have missed something.  How do you reconcile the statement above with your earlier statement,

Also BE protects imported media from overwriting even with PARTIAL overwrite protection level.

When the OPL is set to Partial the imported media is overwriteable.  So exactly what do you mean by
