It's doubtful you'll hear from Symantec quickly, at least not in my experience. So let me provide some input for you that will helpfully get you going along the way.
You need to check to make sure all of your backup exec services are running. To do this open the Services MMC
- Start
- Programs
- Administrative Tools
- Services
(or right click my computer > manage > services)
Once you are there it will list all the services. Make sure that all of the backup exec services are up and running. Go through them, they are usually set to 'automatic' to start but if they stop/crash they don't re-enable. Also I suggest stopping all of them first, and re-enabling them to make sure that everything comes up the way it should.
If it's up and running monitor it, sometimes it has a habit of actually crashing when you go to run the backup and disabling the service.
Let me know if this helps you any
