In attempting to upgrade my Veritas BackupExec for Windows Ver 10 package on two servers, one was successful and the other failed. The message displayed was a Windows Installer Panel with the following text:
"This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that the you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."
The patch was successfully applied on the first server. The second server had the error. From a google search I found a couple of interesting results. The 1st was Microsoft referencing an MS Office installation, Q295823. I installed the recommended utility to clean up MS Office install registry info. The update fails again after the utility was run.
The other search resulted in a fix from Macrovision, Q106795:
When creating a patch that upgrades two or more previous versions, running the patch causes the following error: This Patch Package could not be opened.
Their resolution is to use the a newer version of InstallShield than ver 7.x.
The latter appears to apply to my issue. The BE package being updated does not have any fixes. The one that did upgrade had SP1 applied. There were more results for the error search, but it appears to be an issue I can not control.
Since I still had a copy of the SP1 update, I tried that with the 2nd server and it failed with the same error has the SP4 update.
I would say this is Veritas Backup Exec issue. What is your workaround, since I have no control of the updates.
