Compression rate of 2:1 is a marketing thing, not an engineering thing (see http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/199542.htm ). I usually figure about 1.3:1, so you are on the low side.

Just for grins, if you try to run a ZIP job against the same drive, what kind of compression do you get?

Hello,

The compression ratio displayed when software compression is used is blank or incorrect because the column was only intended to display hardware compression ratio vales.

VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) for Windows Servers supports two types of compression:

Hardware - performed by the tape drive's firmware (independent of Backup Exec)
Software - implemented within the Backup Exec Job Engine (internal to Backup Exec)

Note: It should be noted that the use of software compression on media will render the media unreadable by other backup applications, due to the proprietary software compression format Backup Exec applies to the media when software compression is selected. Hardware compression is the preferred method to use if it is possible that the native operating system backup application may also be utilized to read backup media.

Have you referred the technote mentioned by in the earlier reply of Ken.
