Is there a way to search for all references to a file.. within the log of backups.... so:

[1] I can see if that file was backed up;

[2] I can see 'iterations' of that backed up file;

thanks...

Yes in the restore jobs, there is a button to click to search catalogs, or go to EDIT>> SEARCH CATALOGS

It takes a while, and sometimes locks up BE, so when that happens, restart the BE server, or perhaps try and restart the BE services.

Sure you can.  Create a restore job and in the selection dialog, there is a Search Catalog button.  Click that and you can search for your particular file.  The search result will give you all the versions of the file that are in the catalog.
