This is expected behaviour, as the volumes fill up to a certain size they roll over. This helps them to not become too large. You will probably not see this with users, as the volume of mail needed to cause this to happen is pretty high.

What is odd though, we saw this all the time prior to SP3. But after we went to SP3 it went away. Then last week it returned. I notice becasue when you do a search it is asking to pick "date ranged" VolumeID.
