EV Server consolidation

Hi

How easy\practical would it be to consolidate 6 EV servers into 1 or 2 EV servers?

The scenario is that I have 6 EV servers that are archiving 6 windows file servers and this seems a little overkill. I think this was initially installed this way to cater for the backlog of files that needed to be archived. The EV servers are on a 1:1 basis with the file servers and so each EV server archives  file server.

The backlog of files has long since been cleared and the steady state archiving would probably be ok with just 1 (or perhaps 2) EV servers archiving several file targets each.

Everything is virtialised in VMware and I'm trying to consolidate the number of active VMs and so want to reconfigure EV to remove 4 of the EV servers and leave myself with just 2.

Is this possible\recommended and are there any whitepapers on the best way to do this?

thanks

They will show as hosted. There might also be an issue with upgrading (so I am told..)

You might want to read this one : https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.100017529.html

and this one https://www.veritas.com/content/support/en_US/doc/115743999-121370778-0/id-SF390589499-121370778

But, as you are talking about FSA, you might want to check with support if that works the same. I assume it will, but am not sure. (especially in regards to the shortcuts.

The complicating factor is moving the Indexes if the index locations are the same on each server.  You may need to create a second set of index locations and updating the pointers to the new location.  There are whitepapers on moving vault stores to a different server that are very straightforward.  Just take you time and do one at a time, testing to make sure it's right be moving to the next.

Hi mate,

The easiest way I see here is to use the EV built-in USL feature and move the services 1 or 2 servers. Have a look at this thread: https://vox.veritas.com/t5/Enterprise-Vault/Consolidating-EV-Servers/td-p/747378

Have a look on this technote as well to understand more about EV building blocks concept, unless you are already aware of how it works: https://www.veritas.com/support/en_US/article.100016956

Done this many times without any issues.

hi - many thanks

Once the services have been moved to 1 or 2 of the servers can the remaining servers be fully decommissioned and removed, or will the services always show as being hosted by another server?
