how to build my own netbackup 5200 appliance?

hi to all.

i have been doing some research and it seem to be posible to build your own netbackup appliance.

as far as i know what is needed is the hardware, and the DVD media of PDOS (wich is a modified SLES).

we have access to the hardware needed (according to the specifications of the appliance), but i've got some questions.

- PDOS: where to find DVD or images?

- can a server with PDOS behave as a media server, or just does deduplication?

if i am lost, please could you show me the right direction?

thanks

A 5200 is a SUSE Linux Server with NetBackup installed and using MSDP

To create a 5200 look a like just install SUSE Linux, install NetBackup and create an MSDP disk pool on your disk.

I think you may be referring to a 5020 which is a pure disk appliance.

It depends which version you want to use but downlaods are available - here is 6.5.1:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH67771

However, are you sure you want to do this?

The 5030 Appliances are out there and will be supported for some time but Pure Disk is going End Of Support Life in September next year - so your investment in making you own appliance may not be the best way forward with only just over a year of support left.

You may be better to go with NetBackup and MSDP

Hope this helps

what we need exactly is a 5200, because it is needed that it behaves like a master/media server.

ok, so:

-SLES install

- netbackup install

- configure MSDP

help and fast reply are really appreciated.

You are welcome - of course building your own will not have the benefits of an appliance as it really is a solution in a box with a single point of contact for any issues you may have

Just make sure the specification is good enough and that everything you do is supported and covered in the compatibility list

So LOTS of RAM, fast disk etc.

Good luck and glad to have helped
