Hi Folks,
Good Day..
I have installed BMR in master server(solaris 10) and plan to install boot server..Please let us know shall i install boot server in the master server itself?
Or we have to install on seperate server only?
If i have installed master server itself and i could discover all the solaris client in master server itself.
Could you please confirm...
Thanks,

you should be able to mount the ISO image as if it were a CD / DVD so it should be OK

Yes, the BMR boot server can be the master.
The question is, why has this not been decided before you started to install/ configure.
Backup systems should be designed with a pen and paper.
Generally speaking, backup systems that are not designed, will very often fail in the future, as they are not capable of coping with what is thrown at them - this is NO fault of the software.

Hi Martin,
Thanks for your promt reply.I am going to test BMR thats why not going for dedicated boot server.Once i will complete all testing and will plan to move BMR to production environment.
My master server is solaris 10 hence i will discover solaris 9,8 under this boot server right?
Also confirm shall i do the below chnages in master server ?
■ The tftp service and the bootp service must be available. On some operating systems, these services are commented out of the /etc/inetd.conf file. They must be uncommented and inetd needs to be refreshed for the BMR boot server to function.
Thanks,

OK, testing is good - but it should have an offical design for a production environment.
The BMR server should be fine with solaris 8/ 9, far as I know.

Yes.
I think by default these are enabled.

As per my under standing..We need upload all solaris 10,9,8 OS images with use of cd to that /export/srt with the three time exectuting the ./bmrsrtadm.After image resides inside that path.If any client crash we can use that image..Please let us know its correct?
Thanks,

Yes, your understanding is absolutely correct.
Make a note of this BMR SRT general rule:
BMR Boot server version >= SRT OS version ~= Client OS version to be recovered
So in your case Solaris 10 boot server can create and hold 3 SRTs (10, 9 and 8) to recover Solaris OS family (10, 9 and 8 respectively).
These SRTs are mini-os or temporary OS BMR uses to boot client and recover original client data.
Thanks.

Thanks Mandar.
I am plan to create SRT from boot server to the use of my solaris jump start server.I could see installation files under jump start server.Could you please help us and how we can give path name in the boot server at the time of SRT creation.
Please find the below for my jump start OS details under that path.

You do not require to configure any jumpstart settings. Once you create SRT, do PTR (prepare to restore) from BMR admin GUI for intended client config. Upon successful PTR you can see a restore job under tasks menu. Now you can boot your client where recovery will start automatically.
thanks.

Hi,
By creating SRT we have to give Enter a [hostname:/]pathname containing a suitable Solaris 5.10

Hi Susindran,
Try /jumpstart/OS/Solaris_10_2011-03 path as it contain all the install files as per your other comments...

Hi Tarun
I have given the exact path..After enter it seems ideal..Not mapping anything. How i will come know SRT is creating.

I could see following process is running on the boot server but there is no files under that directory.

Hi,
>> OS CDROM or OS image location [/cdrom]
This bmrsrtadm option is asking you Solaris OS installable. You can either put Solaris OS CD (appropriate version) and say /cdrom or if you have installable NFS shared then provide path like host:/solaris_os_install_dir_path
Thanks.

Thanks mandar. As per symantec advice they asked me to create single SRT with solaris 10 & VxVM 5.1 is enough to recover solaris 9 with VxVm 4.1 aswell?
Its possible?
08-21-2012 05:46 AM
Not sure if it helps but there were major changes between Solaris 10 Update 5 and Solaris 10 Update 8
Not sure at exactly which point this changes happened but you may need an SRT lower than Update 8 for anything below it (including Solaris 8 and 9) and an additional SRT for ones at Update 8 and above
hope this helps

No. In order to restore solaris 9 client having vmvm 4.1 version, you need to create SRT with same OS version and vxvm 4.1 installed in it.
Solaris 10 srt wont recover solaris 9. If you try to do BMR Prepare To Restore then that will fail.
thanks.

Just to clarify my earlier post - and to echo what mandar has said ...
You need an SRT for each OS as well as one for pre and post Solaris 10 U8 - but it may be possible for all of these to exist on a BMR boot server that is of the highest level (so in the above scenario the boot server would need to be Soaris 10 U8 or above)
