in general policy type oracle,DB2 are for online DB backups

policy type standard for file system backups, in standard policiy if it it taking all the data including the Database files, data base should be offile before attempting the backup.

I am always wondering about these kind of questions...

Interview or exam question perhaps?

If you have a real NBU environment, it will be easy enough to find the answers:

  1. Check the policy.
  2. If DB policy type, make a note of the script in Backup Selection.
Go to the client, and check contents of script. Work with dba if you do not understand the script.
  3. If Standard policy type, check Backup Selection.
If Backup Selection includes db files, you need to check for one of 2 thing on the client:
  • bpstart_ and bpend_notify scripts to stop DB before the backup and start it after the backup
    or
  • exclude_list to exclude DB files from filesystem backup
