Backups failing with Status 13/14 VSS issue.

Not applicable

Where I work we have been having issues with certain Windows 2003 Systems (Both 32bit/64bit) failing backups when the "Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider" goes into a hung state i.e. "Stopping".

We have determined a workaround short of a reboot. We perform the following actions and the backup run for a while longer before failing again

c:\tasklist /svc | findstr swprv

We then Kill the hung process id. Then restart the NetBackup client service (If we don’t restart the NetBackup service the next backup runs but subsequent fail with Status code 58 weird)

This resolves the issue for a time but eventually the issue reoccurs.

NetBackup Client version 5.1 MP4
NetBackup Master Version: 6.5 (Solaris)

Notes:

1. A number of the effected systems are SharePoint 2007 servers, but not all.
2. For SP1 systems I have been recommending upgrade to SP2 as we are trying to get all systems up to that level anyway.
3. I have come across multiple fixes for 2003 SP2 systems and I am leaning towards http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940349.

The environment in which I work is very stringent with regards to Change control so just trying possible fixes is discouraged. I have been unable to reproduce the issue on test systems (The issue only appears to effect a couple dozen systems in an environment with over a thousand 2003 svr systems)

Has anyone come across this issue. What I am looking for is an Etrack number or something else that has that nice warm supported feel to it so that I can recommend KB940349 with some confidence. I have looked high and low myself even finding this old post here (https://forums.symantec.com/syment/board/message?board.id=21&message.id=11502).

Any help appreciated thanks.
