Can we make Windows OS as SAN media server in netbackup

Hi,

My Requirement is that i want my all backup job should go through FC (SAN).

Our VM backup is working fine it goes to SAN transport but when i am taking the backup of AIX it goes to LAN and its take time. I want my all backup job should go through FC (SAN).

Setup

Master / Media server: Win 2012 Std. R2

Netbackup Version: 7.6.0.3

Client: vCenter, AIX and Windows.

Symantec support says that you need FC Media server, but it should be on Solaris operating system. You can use windows media server for FC configuration.

Support Says

Please configure FT media server and for that you cannot configure FT on windows server please refer the below guide (Page no 223) for supported OS platforms :

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH76495.

Regards,

Zakir Khan

if you need to configure SAN media server you need to use SUSE or Redhat OS.

INCORRECT!!!

Any OS that is supported as media server can be SAN media server.

FT Media server must be Linux or Solaris SPARC.

SAN Client and SAN Media server are 2 different things. See:  http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH135896

For SAN Media server you need Enterprise Client license and install NBU Server software on the Client.

If you want to share tape drives, you need Shared Storage Option (SSO) license as well.

Any OS that is supported as Media server can be SAN Media server.

See OS CL: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH76648

Simply put

SAN Client uses the regular NetBackup CLIENT SOFTWARE BINARIES  to write over the SAN to a MEDIA SERVER that is connected to Storage (the FT MEDIA SERVER it writes to must run SOLARIS SPARC, RHEL, or SLES)

SAN MEDIA SERVER uses the NetBackup SERVER SOFTWARE BINARIES to write its OWN DATA over the SAN directly to connected storage (the SAN MEDIA SERVER is supported on most operating systems).

Both options require Enterprise Client / NetBackup Platform licenses.

My client is AIX server 6.1 with Netbackup Client 7.6.0.3. and my Master/Media server is Win 2012 Std. R2.

What extra i need to do in my end. that my job should use SAN.

In this case we need FC Media server or not ?????

This is what we are trying to tell you:

You can install AIX client as SAN media server. If you have Enterprise Client license for it.
Remove Client software and install Server software, then configure devices.

Installation is exactly the same as media server installation.

You do not need FT media server if you configure SAN Media server.

Have you had a look at the TN that I have posted above?

if you install client software to the AIX you cannot use san media server option . you should need to install media server agent to the AIX machine and connect or zone your tape library after that you do not need to use FC media server.

Emret,

This "if you need to configure SAN media server you need to use SUSE or Redhat OS. " is not accurate. It applies to SAN CLIENT, not SAN MEDIA SERVER.

We have successfully configure our AIX client as a Media Server.

Which is working fine and we can take the advantage of FC.
