Catalog backup to DataDomain DeDup Units only?!?

Hi,

I am setting up a new Netbackup 7.1.0.1 environment for our company on Windows 2008 R2 Servers x64.

Like many other companies, we are moving away from tape more and more...

In our old environment we are currently using EMC/DataDomain Deduplication (With OST) as our storage units for most of our data... We use Storage LifeCycle Policies to duplicate the backed up data to a DataDomain at a REMOTE SITE (For redundancy & quick recovery in case of a disaster)

My question is in regards to the CATALOG BACKUP.

I've read somewhere that CATALOG backups can ONLY be recovered if they were made on TAPE, and that that TAPE is used on the recovery site...

I would however like to make ALL my backups to my DataDomain unit, including the CATALOG backups.

So:

- Is it possible to backup the CATALOG to a DataDomain unit and duplicate it with SLP to the Recovery Site?
- Is this FULLY SUPPORTED by Symantec Support?
- Can I recover my CATALOG on the Remote Site from the DataDomain Unit, without any problems?
- Any Gotcha's?!?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Fred

Yes, it is supported with NetBackup NetBackup 6.5.6 and 7.0., by using the nbcatsync utility.

Look at:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/blogs/new-adventures-disaster-recovery

I use this between to Data Domain and NetBackup 6.5.6.

After duplication, DR file contain location of the two catalog copies.

nbcasync utility must de used to update location of copy 2 accroding to the recovery environnement.

and bprecover must be executed with "copy 2" parameter.

See the attached pdf file for the fukk scenario.
