Policy migration from 6.5 to 7.1

Hello, Everyone, i hope you can get back to me soon, it is very much appreciated.   I saw the post regarding migrating policies with the SAME VERSION of Netbackup just different hardware.

IF i am upgrading and also on a different hardware platform, HOW  do i migrate policies at that point.   I was told the policies were compatible from 5.1 to 6.5.   Are they compatible from 6.5.x to 7.1? DO i migrate the policies using the catalog backup and restore,  with different versions of netbackup?  6.5.x  to 7.1?   THank you sincerely

Migrating policies between different versions of NBU is not possible.

So, you can do two things to accomplish your goal.

1) If your present master server is compatible with NBU 7.1, then upgrade it to NBU 7.1. Install NBU 7.1 on new master server and migrate the old data to new.

2) Else install NBU 6.5.x on the new hardware, migrate data then upgrade it to NBU 7.1

This TN will help you in migrating catalogs between same versions of NBU master servers: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH77447

Also please note that The host name and IP address of the old and new hardware must be the same.

Pleas see these TechNotes for migrating to new hardware. If you use this method, ALL databases (policies, images, EMM will be preserved).

Depending on OS compatibility, you can either migrate first then upgrade, or upgrade old server, then migrate.

I found a short way to do it and it workred, if you just want to migrate policies, you can copy the /usr/openv/netbackup/db/class/... to the new server at the same location. I have tested it and it worked.

What is the point of having the policies without all backup history (images, tape info, etc....)?

I guess my point is if the catalogs are not compatible   from  6.5 to 7 or 7.1 how can i do a policy migration?   Different hardware of course,  32 bit say to 64 bit

Can i back up a 6.5 catalog install 7.1 on new hardware and restore catalog,  will that work , i am hearing it can't ,  this is UNIX/linux

Technically it is not supported.

It may work, hopefully you will have no issues.  For whatever reason, and,  I have never worked it out - I have seen policies migrated this way cause major issues shortly afterwards.

Even on test kit, I don't copy policies across, I recreate them.

I recommend you throughly test everything, make sure it really is all working.

Martin

No, a catalog backed up at version x.x will only restore to the same version.

The reason is that the EMM DB schema changes between versions,
