bperror -S <error-code> -r

- which basically produces the same output as clicking on the troubleshooter in the Admin Console GUI.

Or:

use the Status Code chart on the KnowledgeBase:

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH58686

Or:

Sorry to say this but Google *is* very good (even compared to the KB search when you prefix your search with site:symantec.com)

Or:

Post your query here?

If you have stauts codes, eg, status 24, 85 etc ... this is a good start.

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH58686

The troubleshooting guide offers some documentation also :

http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5180

And the status code ref guide.

The trick to trouble shooting backup issues is understanding what processes are involved, for example, for a backup failure you are probably looking at ....

bpbrm/ bptm - media server
bpbkar / bpcd - client

So you would start with these logs.

If jobs go active, but are slow to be given resources, you are probably looking at nbjm/ nbrb/ nbemm

So there is no one guide that can do this - sadly, it is simply experience.

It is iomportant though, to understand all about logs :

start here ...

And to have a basic understanding of NBU

The above post is important, you need to understand about collecting and settying up logs, knowing where the NBU commands are and setting these in yout enviroment path.  Additionally, please make sure you give a good description when starting posts - an exaplme of what sort of errors you see would have been useful.
