Frozen tapes

If the media is frozen you should be very careful about unfreeing it.

If the meda is damaged, ot has been damaged by the drive, resulting in the errors that causedit to be frozen, reusing it not only reisks data loss, but could also damage any drive it goes into.

Trust me, this does happen.

However, if you are confident that it has been frozen due to reasons other than errors caused by the drive/ media then it may be ok to re-use.

Personally, I'd retire them, as it is a relatively low number of tapes.

I have made it a habit to check the "Problems" report for the reason why the tape was frozen to begin with. Depending on what it says, I will either unfreeze the tape, or eject it out of the library to check for any physical damage. :)
