How to check if client-side dedup is working?

Gary_Heron

Hi,

Is there a way I can check that client side dedup is working?

I believe it is not in my environment.

Master/Media 7.0.1 storing data to puredisk 6.6.1.2

2003/2008/2008r2 clients with netbackup agent 7.0.1

The amount of data written is always almost equal to the data on the client.

On the clients I also get this error over and over again (service starts - service stops):

The description for Event ID 0 from source STS Proxy Server cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event:

Service has been started

The nbostpxy log shows

Have you explicitly specified Client side dedupe for this client? Default is Media Server dedupe.

Check Host Properties -> Master -> Client Attributes. Client names do not appear by default and must be added to be customised.
When Client name is added and selected, check Deduplication Location.

To display Dedupe rate in Activity Monitor, right-click in the right-hand pane, select Columns -> Layout. Select Deduplication Rate, then click on the Show Column icon.

I have never seen the STS Proxy Server error on any of our clients,

As Marianne wrote, client-side is not by default, and you should perhaps also verify that the policy doesn't disable client-side de-dup.

The frustrating error message in Event log on Windows can be fixed by applying an EEB. Open a support case with SYMC and they can provide you with a client EEB. The backups are OK, but it floods your Event log and if you use SCOM or any other monitoring tools you get many errors in those tools as well (but they are not errors...).
