Migrating NBU 5.1MP7 to NBU 6.5 with an IBM tape library

We are migrating from NBU5.1 MP7 to NBU 6.5.3 soon. We currently are running sun V880 running solaris8 master server and about 7 Linux media servers. and using SSO in the mix; we do backups to disk; have an IBM 3584 tape library with two robots (21 tape drives in robot 0 and 3 tape drives in robot1) we do vaulting and backups to tape as well. We are quite big in UNIX/LINUX/VMWARE/Win07/08 env and have lots of virtual servers....

We are planning to upgrade hardware to T5240 Solaris 10 in addition to the NBU 6.5 upgrade... pretty ambitious....

We are building a test environment using the new hardware T5240 running solaris10; installed NBU5.1 then upgrade to MP7, copied /usr/openv (after catalog consistency check was cleaned) and are trying to mimic our current production backup environment using VMware to built the Linux media servers and have one storage server to write backups to disk in this “test” environment. If all is working, we are upgrading this test environment to NBU 6.5 and see how it goes; not sure how will it behave since the db has tape information and we have no attached tape library. (????) We would not be able to test any tape backups/vaulting since we do not have an extra tape library for testing purposes. Who does???

We seem to be spending a lot of time on building this test environment and we are not even mimicking the real production environment. Was hoping that perhaps someone that has gone through it and help/advice from your experiences.

hope to hear from you,
