What features have been added to 6.5.2?  What the difference between 6.5.1 and 6.5.2 and what will 6.5.3 contain?  Thanks

NetBackup 6.5.2 is suppose to provide support for Windows 2008 Server (which is what we are waiting for).  Also, please scan the forum for topics relating to NetBackup 6.0 MP6.  A "feature" not mentioned in the release guide will cause a full backup to be executed when the update is applied anytime after the last full and before the next cumulative / differential.  It has been suggested this "feature" will be included in 6.5.2.

I have it on good authority from Tech Support that 6.5.2 will include the ability to restore individual documents from a SharePoint document store from full / site level backups.

I've also heard there is a large update to the exchange restores allowing single mailbox restores as well.

They also mentioned in a recent webinar that Linux can be used as a proxy server in 6.5.2 (instead of just Win 2003)

This is what I heard, but not sure if they will happen as planned:

In 6.5.2, support will be added for:

NEW – Instant Recovery from snapshots for Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2003
NEW – Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2008

In 6.5.3, support will be added for:

NEW – Mailbox restore from a Exchange database backup
NEW – Backup & recovery of replicated databases via Exchange Continuous Replication

If you haven't already checked it out, here are a few hundred (!) pages on the 6.5.2 release update:

Veritas NetBackup 6.5.2 Documentation Updates

While I'm plugging links, check out the new "Getting Started" page for NetBackup, which has a lot of places to jump to for more 6.5.2 info:

I would like to know what patch is going to make it so when you click the Preview button to see what tapes you need for a restore, you actually see the tapes you will need for the restore, not a listing of 140 tapes!  Smiley Mad

Well it looks like the incredibly vague "Some changes may  require a services restart" message is still there when you modify a host property.  Was hoping that by now it would be intelligent enough to know for sure.  Meh.

This does not look like it is true; still need Windows 2003 for a proxy server according to the release notes.
Wonder if it was in the beta and didnt make it to production?

A question on upgrading from 6.5.1 to 6.5.2...

Is there a quick guide of the steps necessary to go up this patch level?  The install guide talks about going from 6.0 to 6.5 but I don't see any instructions on upgrading smaller patch levels.

Any guidance for this NEWb would be appricated!

Thanks
Brian

It's pretty straightforward - all the instructions are in the relevant downloads - but essentially it's as simple as running an executable (UNIX or Windows).

Just select the required
ones for Product Version 6.5.2 & away you go. (I presume you didn't do the upgrade to 6.5.1 yourself?)

Thanks for the reply Andy, I read through the doc's but the only "installation" instructions I could find were How to go from 6.0 to 6.5 and then in the actual Solaris installation tar file there's not even a readme!

Anyhow, I've heard and have been told it is just "straightforward" and "pretty simple"

So I guess I'll just shut down the netbackup procs and install the thing!

IV. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS
=============================
** The content of this online Readme supersedes the information in the Readme
contained in the download. **

NOTE: Click on the "Download Now" link, near the bottom of this document
prior to running the following installation procedure for this Release Update.

Before installing this release update, please review the following items:
- Symantec recommends that you perform catalog backups before and after you
apply this maintenance pack.

- If you are planning to install this Release Update as a part of an
upgrade from a 6.0 MPx release, you must first install NetBackup 6.5 GA
before you install this Release Update.

- If you are planning to install this Release Update as a part of an
upgrade from a 5.x release then it is important that you understand that the
existing NetBackup databases must be in a consistent state prior to beginning
the upgrade. Information and tools to assist you in determining the current
state of your database, as well as instructions to help you address any
inconsistencies that you might discover can be viewed on the NetBackup Upgrade
Portal, a part of the Symantec NetBackup Support Web site.

http://support.veritas.com/menu_ddProduct_NBUESVR.htm

- If upgrading a NetBackup client on which this Release Update has been
installed to a NetBackup server, you must first uninstall this Release
Update, perform the upgrade from client to server, then re-apply this
Release Update to the new server.

For Release Update installation on a UNIX Cluster Environment:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Before you install this Release Update, make sure that NetBackup is at
release level 6.5 and configured to run in a cluster.

2) Install this Release Update on the inactive node(s) of the cluster
(perform steps 1 through 3 below).

3) Install this Release Update on the active node of the cluster (perform
steps listed below).

4) If the cluster is in a faulted state, clear the fault.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are two ways to install the client release update software.

1. Remote Installation: Loads the software on a NetBackup server with
the intent of pushing client software out to affected clients.

2. Local Installation: Loads and installs the software only to this
local machine.

Remote client install:

As root on the NetBackup Master/Media Server:

1) Close the NetBackup user interfaces.
- Make sure the NetBackup server has no active jobs running (for example,
backups, restores, or duplications).

- If a database agent is being used, such as Oracle, ensure that the database
services are stopped.

2) Install NB_6.5.2 and NB_CLT_6.5.2 Maintenance Pack binaries.

cd /tmp
/bin/sh NB_update.install

etc etc etc

Okay, maybe one more question.  I started running the updater and it prompted me to remove SYMCdbdmp and SYMCnbvlt.  I didn't see any mention of this and searching on these two in seer doesn't return me any results except 3 pdfs...  Which don't seem to have much info.

Whadayathink?

Found the following in "Veritas NetBackup Vault Administrators Guide" but not sure if it's relevant to your situation or not:

"......
Upgrading NetBackup Vault on UNIX and Linux systems
Use this procedure if you already have Vault installed and are upgrading to a
newer version of Vault.
.
.
.
1 Log in as root to the system on which Vault is installed.
2 Execute the following command to uninstall NetBackup Vault:
pkgrm SYMCnbvlt (on NetBackup 6.5 systems and beyond)
Or
pkgrm VRTSnbvlt (on systems that are older than NetBackup 6.5)
A message asking if you want to remove the package is displayed:
.
.
.
etc etc etc
......"

Not sure, but maybe the install script is just removing existing packages as part of the upgrade process ....

Also, presume the other package was SYMCnbdmp? (NetBackup for NDMP). Couldn't find similar info for this in the NDMP Admin Guide tho'.
